Myth

Myth is about more than ancient tales or legendary figures; myth is the foundational architecture upon which societies construct meaning. It is the collective narrative, told over campfires and kitchen tables, that transcends individual experience; it roots communities in a shared understanding of the world, their place within it, and the values that should govern their interactions. Once imbibed, myth becomes the interpretive lens through which communities make sense of tragedy, victory, and the everyday in between.

Each generation remakes its myths, reinterpreting foundational stories to reflect evolving values, shifting power dynamics, and emerging cultural priorities. What is the myth that your community tells about itself?

History

History is tethered to facts, dates, figures, and the tangible. It’s myth made legible; a way to ground societies in accountability and empirical reality. It is a culture or community’s way of offering clear-eyed reflections on achievements and failures alike. History provides the scaffolding for informed decision making, ensuring that present actions are deeply informed by past outcomes.

Yet, history is also a living thing. It’s what communities choose to highlight, downplay, forget, or emphasize within their official systems for meaning making. This means that history can work as both mirror and tool, allowing us to examine patterns, identify pitfalls, and recognize enduring strengths. It also means that history cannot ever be neutral.
